Early in 2004 I suggested the idea of this exhibition to several charities, and Barnado’s were the only team willing to take me on! The exhibition was originally intended for 2005, because this marked the centenary of the death of Dr Barnado.
Unfortunately I missed that target because it took a long time to winkle out shoes from enough people – and then to paint them. However, Eileen at Barnado’s Cymru didn’t object to its being a year late.

Barnado's is the leading children's charity. They are a national organisation, operating with over 390 community-based projects. They work with over 132,000 children, young people and their families in both urban and rural communities enabling the most vulnerable and disadvantaged children to overcome issues like poverty, abuse, homelessness, bereavement, discrimination and disability. |
"Charity is an enormous lottery, and in Wales and the rest of Great Britain today, thousands and thousands of childhoods are in crisis. These children do not have security, parental support or the love that most of us enjoyed when we were children. Instead they face abuse, discrimination, poverty, homelessness, or disability. Only by working together can we help to give every child the chance of a childhood and a brighter future. " Martin Narey, Barnado's Chief Executive.
